Vanity Fair |
What is vanity? Maybe you have dreamed that you had 7 Oscars, the Nobel Peace Prize, an NHL trophy, and, to top it all off, had won the Miss Universe contest. Or maybe that wasn't you? Well of course, not everyone is a future Nobel Prize winner, but all of us want to be accepted, receive approval and, every now and then, to get a little measure of recognition. What's bad about that?  Is there a difference between vanity and the desire to leave a mark in history? How does vanity manifest itself in our lives and how do we feel when we excel beyond others in some area? We discussed these and other questions in our March 31st meeting of the SMS club. We talked about how we try to display our obvious, and not so obvious, merits in the best light and what the Bible has to say about vanity. Finally, Radislav Tsurkan discussed what we really have to boast about. The desire to improve our reputation, to succeed in life, or simply to boast about our superior work, education, or talent will never fill the emptiness in our hearts. To recognize yourself as imperfect before God and to change the world for His glory ... These are the alternatives that Christians present in the struggle with what is probably the greatest human failing. Whether we accept this or not, in any case it is worth asking ourselves, “Why do we do the things we do?†Let's look at our true motivations and maybe the world will stop being a vanity fair for us.
