One of the consequences of the fall of the Tower of Babel is that Poltavans need to work hard to comprehend the internationally recognized language of international communication. Knowledge of English in modern society is more a necessity than a hobby. If you can speak English, then you can share the feelings of billions of people, you have access to a wealth of information, you can enter a new culture. There is no need to belabor the advantages of fluency in another language; they are obvious and undeniable. But how to learn it?
- It's best to start learning a foreign language at a tender age. It would be ideal if your parents took care of this already. - What, they didn't take care of it? - Then take your textbook firmly in hand and carefully follow the instructions of a wise teacher who has a lot of experience. - But you spilled borscht on your textbook, you ignored the instructions, and the teacher isn't wise or experienced? - Well, then your only hope is «English club». - What exactly is «English club»? - Firstly, it is not our club, but the club of every student eager to grasp the dialect of King Arthur and the Bard (Shakespeare). Secondly, this is the place where you can hear the language from its natural source, people like you - current and former American students. Finally, don't just sit around, come and join us for tea!
This spring we had an excellent opportunity to host two amazing teams of American guests. The first team came to us from the state of Tennessee, the second - from Chicago. One consisted of students, the other, of former students. Each team tried over the course of a few short spring evenings to educate the young people of Poltava in basic communication skills in English. In their turn the Poltavans had a chance to put their knowledge into practice. The teaching approaches continually amazed by their unpredictability: first we all went on a flight across the ocean, then we participated in interesting contests and relay races - later we watched the sleight of hand of a professional magician. After the official part of the program no one wanted to go home because it isn't every day that you get a chance to talk with someone from a foreign culture.
- But was there something special in all of these people who came to visit? - Maybe. Our American friends made every effort to impart to our Poltava students not only English skills, but also knowledge of the One and Almighty God. Jesus Christ - is the one person who unites in himself all cultures and continents. The SMS club members actively helped the guests to share this message. We hope that the Poltava students will improve not only in the linguistic level, but also the spiritual level of their development. As they say in America: "See you later!"
